FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

    Watery, smells bad

By Pepe on Oct 20, 2021

My newest order of this food is watery and smells like exposed metal can. Opened the can and I see big chunks of meat swimming mostly in liquid with a strange red color. My older cans consistency are firm and smell fine. When I shake these new ones it sounds like soup. Also, the dented cans are an issue I have dealt with way too often. Chewy is good and refunds me when I call them about it but I think the dents are from the factory. I get tired of calling them about this. For how much this stuff costs where is the quality control? I think I have no choice but to go back to cooking for my dogs.

No issue with the new formula!

    By Dogs on Oct 13, 2021 top1000Contributor

A lot of people were complaining about the consistency of the new I/D stew, saying it was too watery, but that hasn't been the case for me. I confirmed through SKU number that I received the new recipe, too. Great consistency, not too watery at all, but also not too dry (I found that to be the case with the I/D pate). My chronic pancreatitis-pup is thriving on this food. Perfect stool, too. So thankful for this formulation!! Most palatable of all the other low fat Rx diets out there.

Science Diet prescription ID canned stew with chicken

By Beverly on Oct 3, 2021

My baby was having diarrhea not digesting her food and was put on this some months ago and stopped that completely. The food smelled like people food and she loved it but Hill's is doing something to their food and why out of stock. They are changing it not realizing what it will do to our babies that have to eat this expensive food. Chewy has the price wrong when you open up this product. They have 95.00 something for a case?? That is INSANE. Even though before you open this can it has a different price. I think just an error. I was getting this from my vet and the price is going up. Hills and Royal Canin are changing their products and going through some kind of transition only hurting themselves My baby was having diarrhea not digesting her food and was put on this some months ago and stopped that completely. Hills and Royal Canin are changing their products and going through some kind of transition only hurting themselves as per the 2 reviews that actually got it sometime in September. The vets have been out of stock also?? Those people were very unhappy with their last order. I was going to call my vet and get them to call this in to Chewy for a little cheaper price but not sure now I still want it if the whole product is changed. Very expensive food and worth it for you fur children but I don't think so anymore if they are changing the ingredients and texture. When I first got this food my kitty smelled it across the room and I couldn't keep her out of it as she wanted to lick the can and spoon and I let her. She would have eaten it. Now I am using some of their other food non prescription and serving the same help for my little girl so far. I didn't have a choice. My girls went crazy over the old prescription diet, just loved it too. I don't love the food I am trying now. But the prescription WAS great food. If it ain't broke don't fix it!!!! Seems they have made terrible mistake maybe. People won't buy it anymore including me. We shall see one day if it comes in again but really worry if the food isn't right anymore. … more

    Great service

By BlueJay on Oct 23, 2021

I was very happy with my purchase from Chewy. I had called all the local pet stores looking for the Hill's diet food for my Doxie and no one had any. I called Chewy and had no trouble getting what I wanted. Will order from Chewy from now on. The service was great and the delivery was right on time. Thank you again!

    Only thing that works.

By PomMom on Oct 26, 2021

This is probably the best food I Have given to my Pomeranian who suffers from a sensitive stomach. You can actually see the pieces of carrot and meat which make me feel good about giving it to my dog. the only thing that really blows is trying to find it in stock anywhere because of the shortages.

    Rejections

By Gerrie on Oct 30, 2021

My dog is on a low far diet and I use the Hill's Prescription Low fat i/d kibble twice a day mixed with home cooked food. This he eats. He has refused to eat the canned version and I have wasted two cans so far. I have 11 cans left which I will donate to a local shelter.

Thanks for your prompt service in shipping the Digestive Care i/d canned food. It is best for my sensitive retriever's stomach & she loves it. It was easy to just upload the prescription from my vet to your site. I have not been able to purchase it locally. So appreciated!

    Awesome product

By doglover on Oct 9, 2021

This product right now isn't always in stock at my Vet office. So happy that I could order on Chewy. Made it easy since int needs prescription. I am pleased with delivery and signed up for automatic delivery service so I don't have to chase down her food. She loves this food and I already have noticed a more frisky and active dog. I know she is feeling better-healthier.

    Bad Reaction

By MissPred on Nov 11, 2021

Unfortunately, my dog was prescribed this formulation to help with her Gi problems. After a few days only on this she ended up with a runny nose, sneezing, and difficulty breathing. Just a not a good fit for her.

    Not for everyone

By AnotherDogParent on Oct 14, 2021

My vet recommended this for my dog, who was recently diagnosed with pancreatitis among other things. He refused to eat it no matter what I tried, he didn't even like the smell. Fortunately, Chewy is amazing and offered a refund, so I can replace this with his new prescription food, which he gobbles right up.
